5 reasons I'm not buying the new iPad Pro M4 (2024)

I have iPad Pro 11" since 2020. I use it daily. Here is why I don’t upgrade to the new M4 version.

My main usage is for writing - daily and weekly plans, some schemas, and notes for my projects. Then I use it to watch YouTube, photos, and read books. I occasionally share it with my daughter - she plays games and watches movies.

Design

It’s thinner and lighter. It’s a good thing. My concerns here - will it bend? Anyway, I put my iPad in a cover. It’s essential when it’s used by kids. But it’s also a good way to put it in a vertical position. So this change is important for progress, but not for buying.

Screen

The screen is amazing. The problem here is the same as in the previous point. I use a Moshi screen protector to have a more paperlike feeling for writing. The other benefits are it protects the screen from scratches and removes all reflections. But it hides the beauty of the screen. For me, the writing experience is more important than the quality of the image, because it’s my primary usage. The new iPad Pro has a nano-texture glass option, would be interesting to see how it works in real life.

M4 Processor and Performance

I have no problems with the performance of the device for my usage. The one thing I’m interested in is Final Cut on iPad and it requires speed. I’d like to try it, but I know that it will not speed up my editing process. My timeline is quite simple, I have an established workflow in Davinci Resolve. I’ll lose more time to learn new things. I probably win more if I switch to the paid version of Davinci.

Back Camera

The back camera is 12Mp, on my current iPad I use it only when I can’t use iPhone and I don’t like its quality. Looks like in the new iPad it’s not much better.

Face Camera

They finally fixed the camera position. It makes much more sense to have it on the landscape edge. I use it in landscape mode for 90% of the time. For the first two years till iOS 16, I struggled with FaceId, cause it required me to turn my head to unlock it. Anyway, I rarely use my iPad for calls.

Sound

It’s good enough already. I don’t think I’ll notice the difference.

Apple Pencil Pro

The main thing that can make me upgrade is the new Apple Pencil Pro, it doesn not work with my model. With the current pencil, the only problem I have is that the double tap is too sensitive. It can accidentally switch, and then I need to undo, it’s rare but annoying. I wonder if it’s better with the new pen. Also, it has nice features like squeeze, haptic feedback, and find through “Find My” application. I lost it two times at home and it was not easy to find. I lost it two times at home and it was not easy to find.

So I’ll wait while it is available to touch it in the shops near me. Maybe the new iPad Air will be better for me. I’m only concerned, there is no FaceId and ProMotion.
